Babywearing as an Aid to Bonding and Attachment in Non-Traditional Families/Non-Gestational Parents

This session will present scientific research, and personal experience (wearing during older infant adoption), highlighting the impacts of babywearing to specifically facilitate and foster bonding via biochemical reception and brain adaptation, both for infant and wearer, and how this increased bonding effects these relationships in the near and long-term. This is specifically relevant in “non-traditional” family situations such as: same-sex parents, adoption, foster, premature infants, postpartum depression situations, or any myriad of reasons for the infant to be mentally or physically separated from its biological parent. This session is of particular importance for “non-traditional” (and prospective) families, as well as educators and healthcare professionals. Approved for one (1) CBWS CEU.

Demystifying Woven Wraps

Let's break down the stigmas that sometimes come with woven wraps and truly inspire wearers to try wrapping. My talk will of course go over the plethora of benefits to using woven wraps (not just babywearing in general but specifically what rocks about wovens), it will highlight ways to make wovens more accessible and address privilege (because it can be an expensive hobby - but doesn't HAVE to be!), show that wovens are used by a diverse crowd (races, sizes, abilities, baby sizes and needs, etc.), and weave through wrapping tips, inspiration, and humor.

Amy Rainbow and LaKeta Kemp
2:05PM-3:35PM

Tandem Breastfeeding and Tandem Babywearing

Breastfeeding can affect the wearer, the babies, and the carriers. In relationship to (tandem) breastfeeding and tandem Babywearing, we will explore which carries and carriers best support breastfeeding of singleton, mixed age tandem, and multiples tandem breastfeeding. I will discuss and demonstrate successful tandem Babywearing and breastfeeding options by babies' gross motor skills levels for both multiples and mixed ages.

Babywearing in a Medical World

Our world shifted when our oldest was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with neutropenia and an immune deficiency at 16 months old. Her body not only didn't have the cells it needed to fight infections, it also couldn't remember the vaccines or viruses it had seen before! This diagnosis opened up a whole world to us and we are still pursuing a true cause for her special medical needs.

How We Teach Boys vs. Girls About Money

Beth Kobliner, author of MAKE YOUR KID A MONEY GENIUS (EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT), and expert on kids and money, calls attention to one of the biggest problems in financial literacy today: the money gap. Studies show that parents are more inclined to talk to boys more than girls about money. Furthermore, parents believe boys better understand the value of a dollar. Beth will explore the reasons for this gender disparity, address the effects it has on your child's future finances, and offer practical ways to help parents teach both boys and girls how to develop good money skills.

Baby Carriers as a Public Health Intervention

In this class we will learn about how baby carriers could effect public and private health outcomes. We will push the limits of what we think baby carriers are for in our culture, by exploring research and effects of policy in regards to kangaroo care and baby carrying in hospital and/or public health arenas. We will look at compelling statistics about infant abuse/Shaken Baby Syndrome, infant emergency room visits, as well as Breastfeeding initiation and duration rates and how the introduction of baby carriers as a public health intervention could effect those different statistics. The overall goal is to get babywearing educators to think outside the box of working with babywearers, and for nurses and public health workers to see the compelling statistics about why they want to get a babywearing education and bring it to their hospital/office.

Loss Mama Sanctuary

This session is dedicated to helping mamas work through the many emotions that come with the loss of a baby at various stages of pregnancy and childbirth. We will talk about creating a safe spiritual space, wherever mom is, that allows her to feel, work through, and move past her feelings of deep grief. We'll incorporate deep breathing and movement that will open up the energy centers and allow positive energy to flow. We'll go over some mantras that mamas can say whenever they feel stressed and will encourage peace and hope. We will discuss pregnancy, birth and parenting after loss. The goal is to offer mamas a space to talk about their experiences and walk away with tools to help them through the anxiety that often comes post loss. Pouch Slings with Emmeline Textiles

Lets be honest. Pouch slings don't have the best reputation, partly due to the fact that sizing can be tricky and when they are sized incorrectly, they are practically useless and the fact that they are given away for only the cost of shipping. In reality, they are a useful tool for both educators and caregivers, an asset to any outreach programs and also wonderful to store as a second carrier in a purse or bag. This session will highlight the origins of the pouch sling, focus on sizing procedures and tips, and review pouch sling carries such as cradle carry and upright tummy-to-tummy.

Prepare to Push: What Your Pelvic Floor and Abdomen Want You to Know About Pregnancy and Birth

This session will highlight points from my book of the same title. The pelvic floor and abdomen are two parts of the body that undergo significant change and often do not get the attention they deserve. Women need to get to know their pelvic floor and core on a whole new level and train their bodies for birth. Just like any physical event, birth is something that needs to be trained for and recovered from. The 6 week green light and mommy bootcamp classes are not serving new moms. Let's prepare women to push and highlight the importance of recovery as well so they can have an empowered birth, a supported recovery and have core confidence for motherhood.
